Waiting for Max to finish his ballet class last week, Sophie asked if she could play on the iPad and I told her she could write in my notebook instead. She worked hard on it and then handed me this story. I'm preserving it as she wrote it.
Once upon a time there was a wife and a husband. They had a little girl. They named her Stake Dog becase they planted a stake tree in her honer. And they caut a dog they named beef in her honer too. The mom died. The Dad Did not know how to treat a girl. He put the girl in decade care (Publisher's note: the author explained in an aside that it's like day care, but for a whole decade) wiale he went to a meeting. the teacher was very mean. Stake Dog learned to knit welle everyone else had resses. She made blankets and clothes. One day, a king declared a contest about talents. Every girl her age could join. The teacher's dauter was her age. The first task was to run a mile without stopping. There were 25 girls. 15 passed. How many girls failed? The second task was tricky becase if you failed, you passed. They had to ballroom. 10 + 3 Passed. how many can go on? The third task was you had to escape from a tower using only knit, knitting hook, and steak. The teacher's dauter ate teh stake, and tried asking for more but the gards wodn't give her some more. She died in the tower. It was Stake dog's turn to try. She ate some stake to help her think. She got an idea! I can knit a rope to let me out the window. So she put her plan into actshin. She passed the test and the Dad at his meeting, the meeting was about choosing a new king. The dad turned out to be King. He found a nice queen. They all lived (wait for it...) happily ever after. THE END!
There are so many amazing things we love about this story. First of all, Steak Dog doesn't wait for anyone to come save her. She found what she wanted, knew she had the skills to make it happen and took control of her life. The math quiz in the middle also points out the kind of person Sophie is. She loves math. Also, the parenthetical at the end is amazing. Not just because it's funny, but she correctly used parentheses. As punctuation nerds, Chelsea and I are very proud.
